Description

London-based Remi Rough is one of the defining figures of abstract urban art. The artist emerged from the graffiti scene of the 1980s and today continues to develop his work across public spaces, his studio and exhibition settings. His practice is characterised by minimalist geometric forms, precisely drawn lines and a composition in which colour, surface and space interact in a dynamic interplay. Remi Rough returns to this year’s Urban Art Biennale following his last appearance in Völklingen in 2016. His site-specific work unfolds across wall surfaces measuring two by four metres and, with a visual language that is both minimalist and powerful, adds a striking highlight to the exhibition route. It is precisely this reduction that creates its impact: the work channels the surrounding energy of the site and translates it into a clear, almost architectural formal language.
